Living with ulcerative colitis can be challenging. With proper care
and diet, though, one can live a mostly symptom free life.
Ulcerative colitis is a type of inflammatory bowel disease, also
known as IBD. It causes chronic inflammation of the digestive tract
and is characterized by chronic diarrhea and abdominal pain. Like
other inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn's disease, ulcerative
colitis can severely hinder one's day to day life, and in some cases
can lead to complications that may be life-threatening. The disease
most commonly affects the inner lining of the large intestine, or
colon, and the rectum. It occurs only on continuous sections of the
colon, unlike Crohn's which can occur anywhere in the digestive
tract. Presently there is no known cure for ulcerative colitis. There
are, however, therapies and dietary changes that can help to
drastically reduce the symptoms, making living with ulcerative colitis
much less difficult.
In many cases, patients suffering from ulcerative colitis are given
prescriptions for anti-inflammatory drugs and autoimmune
suppressors. Some may also be prescribed antibiotics, anti-diarrhea
medications, or other medicines. Even with medication, most people
will also need to make lifestyle changes when trying to get their
ulcerative colitis symptoms under control. Although diet is not
thought to cause the disease, changes in diet after the onset of
ulcerative colitis can greatly help to reduce the amount of symptoms
one is experiencing. Most doctors recommend that ulcerative colitis
sufferers limit their dairy intake and avoid problem foods that tend
to cause flare ups. Although fiber is an essential part of many other
diets, for people with ulcerative colitis, it can make gas and pain
worse, so many people must limit their intake of this as well. If you
are looking to control ulcerative colitis with diet, it is important
to speak with your doctor or a nutritionist to ensure that you are
eating a proper diet and getting all the necessary vitamins and
nutrients you need in order to remain healthy.
Dealing with ulcerative colitis can be very challenging. Since
there is no known cure for the disease, many people suffer from it
long term. With proper treatment, however, it is likely that you will
have periods where you experience little or not symptoms as a result
of the disease.
